(AKA Seduced by the Demon) A Brazilian satansploitation flick where events surrounding a murder are presented in court.
We go to a courtroom where Dr. Fábio (José Mesquita) is testifying in the trial of his wife's murder. A crime for which his son stands accused.
A flashback corresponding to Dr. Fábio's testimony. He's at the university with Mônica (Shirley Steck). She is his daughter-in-law, and they're having an affair.
Mônica gets into an argument with Roberto (César Roberto), her husband.
Fábio and his wife Solange (Ivete Bonfá). Solange is a bit of a lush, and they have a volatile relationship.
Fábio has dinner with Mônica, who then goes upstairs.
Mônica finds Solange dead by gunshot wound.
Mônica is taken by the police.
Back to the court case. Mônica gives her testimony.
Mônica remembers packing for a getaway with Fábio.
Her roommate is naked except for panties and is fast asleep. We'll meet her again later in the film.
The scene goes on a while. Never has packing a suitcase been so well chronicled on film.
Mônica in the hotel room with Fábio.
Fábio looks at Mônica and pictures her completely naked.
Mônica suddenly sees a vision of Roberto approaching her. She screams and faints. Fábio runs to Mônica's aid and tries to revive her.
Back to the courtroom. Roberto's friend testifies.
They were out partying and picked up some prostitutes.
They're all drunk and climb into his car.
The camera is sure to get a look up their skirts as they climb in the car.
The red haired girl is paired up with Roberto.
But Roberto is suddenly not very responsive. She gets offended at his unresponsiveness and leaves.
Roberto is becoming possessed by the devil. Indeed he sees himself as satan.
They all congregate in the living area, minus Roberto.
Here comes Roberto. He lifts the two girls up by their necks, killing them.
Flashing back to another time - Solange is alone reading.
Roberto's friend arrives looking for Dr. Fábio. Fábio isn't here, but Solange begs him to stay.
Solange seduces Roberto's friend.
The court testimony continues. Mônica's roommate (the one that was sleeping nude while she packed her suitcase) reads, waiting for Mônica's to go to sleep.
She sees Mônica is asleep. She gets changed to sneak out and be with Roberto's friend.
Outside, they're attacked by a possessed Roberto. The cross around her neck keeps Roberto at bay.
A very odd change of scenery. Fábio and Solange take a trip... in a carriage, wearing clothing from another century. The landscape they travel through is clearly taken from another film [from the German production Die Schlangegrube und das Pendel (1967) by Harald Reinl].
They come upon a satanic cult ceremony. Solange rescues the baby from the satanic altar. The baby is Roberto.
Finally Roberto testifies. In a flashback we see the fateful incident play out. Possessed by the devil, Roberto goes to his mother's room and kills her.
He finds Fábio at church and tries to kill him. However, his father stabs him with a crucifix. The crucifix stabbing at first seemed to have killed Roberto. Then, miracle of miracles, it actually removed the devil from him. Roberto runs giddily to his father and they embrace. THE END
REVIEW: Filmed in 1975, released in theaters in 1978 and on video in the early 1980s, this film has somehow flown under my radar all these years. It's a masterpiece of bad filmmaking. This film would be a riot viewed with an audience. The acting, the story, the direction - everything is hitting that sweet spot of terrible where it's a joy to behold. Add to that, the over-the-top genre elements: a black mass, a hilariously bedecked devil, levitating kids, etc. So much fun.
I don't feel right giving this sweet bastard anything less than a ten, however, it does have some flaws. I kinda wish it wasn't centered around the courtroom and told linearly instead of flashbacks via witness testimony. Also, it wasn't quite sleazy enough. All in in all, I had an incredible amount of fun watching this.RATING: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10
