La femme en spirale (1984)

 

Chuck Vincent had a tendency to employ a lot of porn actresses in his more mainstream softcore releases.  Jean-François Davy does the same here, featuring legend Hélène Shirley and other adult film stars in this rather tame drama. 

Tales of a Salesman (1965)

 

A door-to-door salesman manages to see each of his customers naked thanks to his clumsiness.  Oh, and he's also assisted by a poltergeist.

A Cat in the Brain (1990)

 

(Original Title: Un gatto nel cervello) Lucio Fulci plays himself, a horror director plagued by the scenes his filmed, unable to separate his movies from his reality. Packed with loads of clips from his filmography.  I say that like it's a good thing.  It's not.

A straight-to-video erotic movie which tries its damndest to be a "serious movie"; a documentary style profile of an upper crust Hollywood brothel.  It features the great Susan Featherly, so worth a look (as this is among the last Featherly features we haven't covered on VZ1).

(AKA Model Lust) This movie art doesn't represent this film at all.  It's a silly erotic romance; not a minute of seriousness to be found.

Zoom Up: Seiko's Thigh (1982)

 

(Original Title: Seiko no futomomo: Zoom Up) Shy loser Toshihiko is obsessed with college girl Seiko.  He also has an upskirt fetish, and earns money by submitting these panty shots to a skin magazine.  The question is, will Toshihiko ever stop just photographing women and actually become involved with them - Seiko, his true love, in particular?

Scyla (1967)

 

These sixties Nick Millard films are all alike: dreamy B&W imagery following a detached chick around while a narrator recites pretentious prose.  They're not bad (actually often quite good), but it is remarkable how often Millard recycled this formula.  It's genius really: an otherwise cheap-o sex flick, barely a rung higher than a stag film, is given a stylish Euro veneer, making it seem artsy and cool.

The Animal in Me (1985)

 

I'm going to generalize here, but these are the stages american porn films followed: (1) Early to mid 70s: ultra low budget bump-and-grind; lots of gross ball sack close-ups.  Clumsily made, but that's part of the charm. (2) Late 70s to early 80s: sizeable budgets, decent acting and ambitious stories. That b-movie charm is lost as they try to emulate mainstream films. (3) Mid to late 80s: home video craters the so-called golden age and things are back to small scale.  Much less aspirational (and lacking that early 70s "loveable weirdness") but chock full of rad fashions and big hair. And that's where this film lands.

The title is clearly a play on The Who song, and the story is one we've seen a million times before in exploitation films: a naive girl arrives in the big city, becomes a prostitute, gets into trouble and finally must choose between a tragic end or fly the straight and narrow.  That old chestnut.

Classical Romance (1984)

 

Classic example of porn chic - where it lands squarely in that "thirtysomething" / "Big Chill" zone Boomers were going through at the time.  Lots of Kramer vs. Kramer, On Golden Pond, Tootsie, Tender Mercies type shit. You could go to this porno and tell yourself you're seeing a respectable couples romance - and you wouldn't be wrong.

One of the four films directed by Dale Berry, the man who gave us Hip Hot and 21 which had many of the same cast. This one involves three ladies who plan to steal a crown from the King of Sex at the Mardi Gras celebration.

Talk Dirty to Me (1980)

 

Often cited as one of the best films to come out of the golden age of porn.  (I could have said one of the seminal films to cum out of the golden age of porn... but I'm better than that.) This Anthony Spinelli flick spawned an untold number of sequels.

(Original Title: Le notti erotiche dei morti viventi) Filmed in tandem with Porno Holocaust (1980) with the same cast and crew. 

Lesbian Schoolgirls and the Pleasure of Perverting (1983)

 

(Original Title: Colegialas lesbianas y el placer de pervertir)  An Andrea Albani film about two conniving greedy bitches who attempt to get a relative's fortune through seduction and deceit. 

Tentazione (1988)

 

An Italian erotic thriller about a rich woman who gets played by a photographer and an up-and-coming model.  But she'll have her revenge.

Mawra's Olga series begins with White Slaves of Chinatown (1964), then Olga's Girls (1964), this film and finally Mme. Olga's Massage Parlor (1965), which is sadly considered lost.  There were other Olga films over the years (ex. Olga's Dance Hall Girls in 1969) but they aren't canon.

Another 1960s Nick Millard film, so you know what you're in for: dimly-lit stylistic B&W imagery with no dialog, only narration by a beautiful but unhappy woman who lives a detached and tragic life.

Heterosexualis (1973)

 

John Hayes made some of the most compelling, odd, and diverse exploitation movies of the seventies. After Golden Girl Rue McClanahan turned him down for marriage, my man Hayes went on to make some great trashy weird-ass films (including The Hang Up, Mama's Dirty Girls and Sweet Trash). This movie in particular is among his most insane.  I hate when movie posters don't even try to represent the film itself.  I get it was just a way to get butts in seats, but this poster is so far from illustrating this movie it's not even funny.  This is a bizarro sexy comedy; the poster makes it look like a generic straight-ahead porno.  Whatever.  Let's not get hung up on the poster - and check out this memorably strange piece of cinema sleaze.

(Original Title: Intime Stunden auf der Schulbank) Typical cheap trash from Jürgen Enz.  He's not exactly a good filmmaker, but he does capture the Euro-eighties vibe quite well.

The Great American Girl Robbery (1979)

 

(AKA Cheerleaders' Wild Weekend) Cheerleaders from three schools take a bus for a competition in Sacramento.  Along the way, they are taken hostage.  It's a traumatic experience, but the girls still find the strength to dance topless for their kidnappers.
