Spanish horror flick about an ascot wearing stud who's trying to find out what killed his wife and unborn child. Her sisters sure are acting strange, and what about those masked figures in the cemetery... or the mad scientist?
Michael Sharrington (Bill Curran) returns to his home after a long business trip
He finds out the bad news: his wife and unborn child are dead.
His wife's family sure acts strange. Barbara (María Paz Madrid), and the two blondes Pamela (Marisa Shiero) and Lilith (Titania Clement) don't give up much information.
A flashback to Elisabeth (Inés Morales), Michael's dead wife.
Pamela (Marisa Shiero) treats Elizabeth like shit. Shades of revelations to come.
Inspector Harrison (John Clark) is on the case.
Michael tries to get to the bottom of his wife's death, but everyone is so damn secretive about it, it just makes matters more suspicious. And love that ascot!
Mr. Fowles (Víctor Israel) lets suspicious characters in and out of the cemetery.
There's definitely something up between sisters Lilith (Titania Clement) and Pamela (Marisa Shiero)
Dr. Lexter (Frank Braña)
Michael finally gets into the cemetery and is attacked by these mask wearing creeps.
Margaret (Beatriz Elorrieta)
Margaret witnessed a youngster attacked by some kind of monster.
The sisters suspect the mad doctor's experiments.
The inspector tries to extract info from Elizabeth's family, but no dice.
Margaret and Lady Anne (Catherine Ellison) go snooping around
The truth starts to come out. Pamela (Marisa Shiero) shows her bitch side.
A flashback showing Pamela was actually having an affair with Michael.
She's also singing "la la la" like a goddamn mad woman.
Pamela and Lilith just stand and laugh as Elizabeth dies on the floor.
Lady Anne (Catherine Ellison) has a thing going with Dr. Lexter (Frank Braña)
Lexter is attacked by the monster.
We haven't been able to get a good look at the monster until the very last minutes of the movie, where it's shot by the police accompanied by Michael.
This film actually gets a lot of love from critics and cult film fans. It's mainly due to the way Miguel Madrid captures this otherwise tired story. He creates an amazing looking world, snow-covered and gothic, with everything seeming mysterious and slightly bizarre. The film is almost just as effective with the sound off.
Yet, it bored the shit out of me. I like to think I can hang with a slow burn, but the story has to pull me in first. This seemed a bit lifeless at times, and I felt that the typical genre elements (mad scientists, monsters, grave robbers, etc.) weren't used near enough. Reading reviews, you get the impression from critics that this is a feature not a bug. I'd disagree.
