RATING: ☆☆☆☆ 4/10

REVIEW: This kinda sucked. Jesús Franco is always so unbelievably sleazy, but here he holds back (or at least in the version I have). You don't hold back in a jungle movie! Franco could have joined the ranks of Cannibal Holocaust, but he played it tame. Sure, we see Diana topless and Lita naked a couple times, but that's woefully weak by jungle/cannibal movie standards. And what the hell happened to Rofo? We're introduced to him as a main character - one of the few interesting dudes in the movie. Then, he learns of the plan to kill Diana, and he just leaves midway through the movie! Franco shit the bed with this one. Skip it.

DOUBLE FEATURE - Les amazones du temple d'or (1986)

SYNOPSIS

A plane crash lands in the middle of the African jungle. The survivors are a man and a young girl. A jungle tribe is there to bow down before them. A few years later, we find the girl, Diana (Katja Bienert), has become one with the jungle. A veritable Sheena. A group of hunters have entered the territory of a jungle tribe. They are sentenced to death for this mistake. Diana hears the commotion. Diana comes to the hunters' rescue. The tribe leader, Noba (Aline Mess), is upset with her intrusion, but the hunters manage to escape thanks to the jungle girl.

Elsewhere, Hermine (Lina Romay), Diana's wealthy mother, is dying. The hunters inform her that they saw her daughter in the jungle. So, Hermine finances a trip for them to go and get her. Let's meet the search party: Mathieu (Olivier Mathot) is the spoiled effeminate brother of Hermine, Rofo (Javier Maiza) is the tough-as-nails leader of the expedition, Lita (Mari Carmen Nieto) is Mathieu's wife, Fred Pereira (Antonio Mayans) is the brains behind the operation, and Payton (Albino Graziani) is the grizzled hunter that found Diana in the jungle. The plot thickens: Mathieu and Lita don't want to bring Diana back - she stands to receive all of Hermine's fortune.

It turns out that guy from the plane is still alive - it's Mr. De Winter, who now goes by "Great White Chief" and is worshiped by the tribe. Diana doesn't remember anything about her previous life, and doesn't know that he's actually her godfather. She expresses concern that Noba is getting violent after her actions against Payton and the other hunters. The Great White Chief tells her not to worry about it. Barely in the jungle five minutes and the search party is already causing problems. They spot a tribesman and immediately blow his ass away. Noba has a problem with whitey coming to her jungle and blowing away her people. She rallies the troops to go after the search party. The Great White Chief hangs back.

Diana watches the search party. She sees Lita and Pereira screw, and Lita almost being eaten by a crocodile. There's ugly footage of natives killing a croc, but it's clearly a different film stock and from another movie. The gang blows away some more random tribesmen. No wonder Noba is pissed! Rofo discovers Lita and Mathieu's little plan (Pereira is in on it as well, and agrees to kill Diana if he can get a cut of Hermine's fortune). Rofo says fuck this, and leaves on a raft. (!) Diana runs into Lita and Mathieu and takes them to see the Great White Chief. At the tribal village.- Mathieu and Lita meet with the Chief (who they know as "Dan") - and they quickly determine that he's gone fucking insane. He's obsessed with his diamonds, calling them "his precious" repeatedly. (Sound like anyone you know?)

They escape from the village with Diana showing them the way to safety. Pereira is scared by a rhino, but that is only "Bamba", Diana's wild friend. (Insert shitty stock footage of a rhinoceros). Pereira and Diana form a bond (but no sex). Noba and her crew kill Lita and her conniving husband. Noba captures Pereira, but Diana is able to set him free. She sees that he's got some diamonds in his possession. This disgusts Diana and tells him he can go back home by his own damn self. The drunken Scot/Great White Chief/Gollum/Dan and his goddaughter watch as Pereira walks off into the jungle. THE END
